DESCRIPTION

Chegg is an online learning platform transitioning from a declining consumer academic services business to a B2B workforce skilling platform. Chegg's legacy business, Chegg Study, provides subscription-based homework help, writing tools, and math problem-solving to college students, acquired primarily through organic Google search traffic. This model has been severely disrupted by Google's AI Overviews feature, which reduced search traffic to Chegg and drove a steep revenue decline. Management treats Chegg Study as a cash generation vehicle rather than a growth business. Chegg's growth engine is its Skilling segment, built around two assets: Busuu, a language learning platform sold to enterprise clients as per-seat B2B subscriptions, and Chegg Skills, a workforce upskilling platform offering courses in AI, coding, data analytics, and cybersecurity, sold primarily through distribution partners like Guild. Together, the Skilling segment generated ~$70M in FY2025 revenue and is targeting double-digit growth. Chegg also licenses its proprietary library of over 130M academic Q&A pairs to AI companies as training data. Chegg has cut roughly 56% of its workforce and is targeting non-GAAP expenses under $250M in 2026, down from $536M in 2024. The B2B skilling model is considered more durable than the consumer model because it relies on enterprise contract renewals rather than Google search traffic.
