DESCRIPTION

SemiLEDs develops, manufactures, and sells LED chips and LED components, with a primary focus on specialty and industrial applications such as UV curing, medical and cosmetic light therapy, horticulture lighting, entertainment lighting, and germicidal devices. SemiLEDs sells LED chips to packagers and distributors, and sells packaged LED components directly to distributors and end-customers. Its sales force is based in Taiwan, and its customer base is concentrated in India, Japan, the Netherlands, and the U.S. Revenue is highly concentrated, with the top three customers accounting for 94% of revenue in FY25. SemiLEDs' core proprietary technology is a vertical LED chip structure built on a copper alloy base, which the company argues delivers better thermal management and light output than conventional chip designs. SemiLEDs holds 178 issued patents. The company has been transitioning toward a fabless model for chip production — outsourcing manufacturing to third-party foundries — while retaining its own Taiwan facilities for LED component packaging and assembly. This shift aims to reduce overhead from underutilized manufacturing capacity. SemiLEDs also provides OEM/ODM design and manufacturing services for UV LED systems used in industrial printing and curing equipment. A nascent collaboration with a Japanese partner is developing photonic sensors for smartphones, smartwatches, and AR/VR glasses. Revenue is driven by units sold, pricing, and product mix, with higher-power, specialized products like UV LED components carrying higher value than commodity general lighting chips.
