DESCRIPTION

Origin Agritech is a small Chinese agricultural biotech company focused on developing and selling hybrid corn seeds in China. The core business today is conventional corn seed sales, which Origin distributes through a network of majority-owned regional joint ventures with local distributors across several Chinese provinces. Origin's longer-term ambition is to build a second, higher-margin revenue stream by licensing GMO traits and gene-editing technology to other Chinese seed companies through its "Origin Marker Biological Breeding Service Consortium." Management argues this licensing model would be largely capital-light, since the underlying R&D costs are largely already sunk. Origin's production operations are anchored by a Xinjiang facility with 4,000 hectares of plantation and 75,000 tons of annual processing capacity. On the biotech side, Origin received a biosafety certificate for its BBL2-2 insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant corn trait in May 2024, with GMO seed commercialization targeted for 2026. Origin also co-developed a gene-editing platform called Hi3 with China Agricultural University, which can improve corn inbred lines in roughly one year versus three to four years via traditional breeding methods. Origin's stated strategy is to grow into a top-five Chinese corn seed company by the early 2030s and eventually generate 20% of revenue from overseas markets. The company is not yet cash flow positive from operations.
