DESCRIPTION

Shinhan Financial Group is South Korea's first privately established financial holding company and one of the country's largest diversified financial groups. Its core business is banking, operated primarily through Shinhan Bank, which serves roughly 21 million active customers across approximately 650 domestic branches and a digital platform. The bank collects deposits and extends loans to retail and corporate customers, with the retail book dominated by mortgages and home equity loans, and the corporate book heavily weighted toward SME lending. Beyond banking, Shinhan Card is the group's second most important business, operating as one of Korea's largest card issuers with roughly 13 million cardholders; it earns revenue from merchant discount fees, revolving interest, card loans, and auto leasing. Other business lines include securities brokerage and investment banking (Shinhan Securities), life insurance (Shinhan Life Insurance), and asset management (Shinhan Asset Management). The group earns the majority of its revenue through net interest income — the spread between loan yields and funding costs — with noninterest income from card fees, brokerage commissions, insurance premiums, and asset management fees providing diversification. Over 80% of revenues come from Korea, with a growing international presence in Asia, particularly Vietnam, Indonesia, and Japan, focused on Korean corporates and local retail banking. Capital return is a stated priority, with management targeting a 50% total shareholder return ratio by 2027.
