DESCRIPTION

BCB Bancorp is the holding company for BCB Community Bank, a New Jersey-chartered community bank headquartered in Bayonne, NJ. BCB operates 27 branches across northern and central New Jersey and Staten Island/Long Island, NY, serving small and mid-sized businesses and individuals in commuter communities around Manhattan. BCB's core business is traditional community banking: taking in deposits and lending those funds out at higher rates. The spread between deposit costs and loan yields — the net interest margin — is the primary driver of profitability. BCB's ~$2.7B loan book is concentrated in commercial real estate and multi-family loans (~75% of total loans), with smaller exposures to commercial business loans, residential mortgages, and legacy portfolios in business express and cannabis-related lending. BCB sells through its branch network, relying on local loan officers and relationship banking rather than price or technology to attract customers. BCB's near-term strategy has shifted from growth to balance sheet repair: management is intentionally shrinking the loan book to reduce reliance on wholesale funding and address elevated credit losses, particularly in its now-discontinued business express loan product and cannabis-related loans, which together drove significant charge-offs in recent periods. Going forward, BCB intends to focus new originations on CRE and multi-family loans, which it views as offering better risk-adjusted returns.
