Alcon is the global leader in eye care, selling medical devices and consumer eye care products through two segments: Surgical and Vision Care. The Surgical business covers the full workflow for cataract, vitreoretinal, refractive, and glaucoma procedures through three product categories: intraocular lenses (IOLs) implanted during cataract surgery, single-use consumables used in each procedure, and multi-use surgical consoles and lasers. The model has a razor-and-blade dynamic — Alcon places consoles in hospitals and surgery centers, then generates recurring revenue on every procedure through consumables and IOLs. Premium presbyopia-correcting IOLs (PCIOLs), which are largely patient-pay and priced well above standard lenses, are a key revenue mix driver. The Vision Care business sells contact lenses and over-the-counter ocular health products. Contact lenses — led by the DAILIES TOTAL1 and PRECISION1 brands — generate a subscription-like recurring revenue stream, and Alcon actively pushes wearers toward higher-margin premium daily lenses. Ocular health products include Systane dry eye drops, Pataday allergy relief, and contact lens care solutions, sold through pharmacies and retailers. Alcon recently launched Tryptyr, a first-in-class prescription dry eye drug. Key growth drivers include expanding premium PCIOL penetration globally, replacing an aging installed base of ~30,000 surgical consoles with its new Unity platform, and pushing into adjacent areas like glaucoma, refractive surgery, retina, and corneal disease through acquisitions and internal R&D.
