DESCRIPTION

South Dakota Soybean Processors (SDSP) is a regional soybean processor based in South Dakota, structured as an LLC owned by roughly 2,240 members, many of whom are local agricultural producers. SDSP crushes soybeans into two primary outputs: soybean meal and hulls (about 80% of a bushel by weight), sold as livestock feed to resellers, feed mills, and producers primarily within 200 miles of its facilities; and soybean oil (about 20% of a bushel), sold in crude and refined grades to food manufacturers, biodiesel and renewable diesel producers, and chemical companies. SDSP operates three crushing facilities and two oil refineries in South Dakota — a primary plant in Volga, a specialty oilseed plant near Miller focused on non-GMO and organic soybeans, and a newly completed large-scale facility near Mitchell that nearly doubles total processing capacity. SDSP earns money on the crush spread — the margin between the cost of raw soybeans and the combined value of meal, hulls, and oil produced. By refining crude oil in-house and selling directly to food manufacturers, SDSP captures additional margin beyond basic crushing. The Miller facility's specialty processing of identity-preserved and organic soybeans commands price premiums over commodity volumes. SDSP also holds a minority stake in Prairie AquaTech, which produces soy-based protein feed for aquaculture and pet food. Because SDSP is structured as a partnership, profits flow through directly to members as cash distributions with no corporate-level tax.
