DESCRIPTION

Banco de Chile is a full-service commercial bank operating exclusively in Chile. Founded in 1893, it is one of Chile's largest banks by loans and its most profitable by net income. The bank's core business is lending and deposit-taking across retail and wholesale segments. Retail banking, which accounts for roughly two-thirds of total loans, serves individuals and SMEs with residential mortgages, consumer loans, credit cards, and commercial loans. Wholesale banking serves mid-sized and large corporations with commercial credits, leasing, foreign trade loans, and factoring. Banco de Chile's primary structural advantage is its leading position in demand deposits — the non-interest-bearing checking and current accounts that make up 30% of its funding base vs. ~23% for the rest of the industry — giving it a lower cost of funds than peers. A significant share of the bank's loan book and investment portfolio is indexed to UF, Chile's inflation-linked unit, meaning higher inflation directly boosts net interest income. On the fee side, Banco de Chile operates Chile's largest mutual fund manager, a securities brokerage, an insurance brokerage, and a newly launched card-acquiring subsidiary targeting SMEs. The bank has cut its branch network from 390 in 2018 to 217 by year-end 2025 and reduced headcount, driving an efficiency ratio well below the industry average. Its digital FAN account ecosystem has added two million customers and serves as the primary retail acquisition channel for cross-selling credit and investment products.
