Flowers Foods is the second-largest packaged bakery company in the U.S., behind Bimbo Bakeries. Flowers makes and sells bread, buns, rolls, snack cakes, cookies, crackers, bagels, and baking mixes, sold primarily through grocery, mass merchandise, and convenience stores. The flagship brand, Nature's Own, is the best-selling loaf bread in the U.S. Other key brands include Dave's Killer Bread (DKB), the #1 organic bread brand; Canyon Bakehouse, the #1 gluten-free bread brand; Wonder, a mainstream bread brand with broad consumer awareness; and Tastykake, a regional snack cake brand. In February 2025, Flowers acquired Simple Mills, a better-for-you brand of crackers, cookies, snack bars, and baking mixes distributed in over 30,000 stores. Branded retail accounts for roughly two-thirds of sales, with the remainder split across private-label, foodservice, and contract manufacturing. Walmart and Sam's Club together account for over 20% of sales. Flowers distributes primarily through a direct-store-delivery system using ~4,300 independent distributor-owned territories, which provides strong shelf presence but is cost-intensive. Profitability is driven by brand mix, volume, and ingredient costs — premium brands like DKB and Canyon Bakehouse carry higher margins than mainstream or private-label products. The core challenge is secular volume decline in traditional loaf bread, which pressures fixed-cost absorption. Flowers is responding by shifting mix toward premium and better-for-you products, closing underperforming bakeries, and consolidating its supply chain.
