DESCRIPTION

Hanmi Financial is the holding company for Hanmi Bank, a California-chartered community bank founded in 1981 to serve the Korean-American business community. Hanmi operates branches across nine states and focuses primarily on lending to small- and medium-sized businesses, with a loan portfolio of roughly $6.6B. The portfolio is predominantly real estate-secured: commercial real estate makes up about 61% of total loans, residential mortgages about 16%, C&I loans about 16%, and equipment financing about 6%. Hanmi funds its lending with deposits from businesses and individuals, maintaining noninterest-bearing deposits at roughly 30% of total deposits — a meaningful cost advantage. Hanmi earns most of its revenue from net interest income, the spread between loan yields and deposit costs. Fee income comes primarily from selling the guaranteed portions of SBA loans and residential mortgages into the secondary market. A notable growth initiative is Hanmi's "USKC" program, which targets US subsidiaries of Korean corporations — particularly manufacturers in the Southeast US. USKC loans reached roughly $862M and USKC deposits exceeded $1B by year-end 2025. To support this initiative, Hanmi opened a representative office in Seoul in late 2024. Hanmi's competitive positioning centers on deep relationships with Korean-American and multi-ethnic business communities, cultural and language affinity, and specialized products like SBA loans and international trade finance for businesses engaged in Asia-facing import/export activity.
