DESCRIPTION

Materion produces advanced engineered materials — specialty metals, alloys, coatings, and optical components — for applications where standard materials won't work. Customers need Materion's products for unique combinations of properties: extreme strength-to-weight ratios, high electrical and thermal conductivity, precision optical performance, or durability in harsh environments. Materion sells to roughly 800 customers across semiconductor, aerospace and defense, industrial, automotive, energy, consumer electronics, and life sciences, primarily through a direct sales force. Materion operates through three segments. Performance Materials (~55–60% of value-added sales) produces beryllium and copper-based alloys, precision clad strip, and high-performance beryllium products, and operates the only bertrandite ore mine in the western hemisphere. Electronic Materials (~35–40%) produces vapor deposition targets, advanced chemicals, and specialty metal products used in semiconductor manufacturing across logic, memory, power, and storage applications. Precision Optics (~10%) manufactures thin-film optical coatings and filters for defense, semiconductor, and medical applications. Materion's key financial metric is value-added revenue, which strips out pass-through precious metal costs that carry no margin. The business has high fixed costs from vertically integrated manufacturing, so margins expand meaningfully with volume. Growth is anchored to semiconductor and AI demand, defense spending, new energy (including nuclear), and space, with a mid-term target of 23% adjusted EBITDA margins.
