DESCRIPTION

Northwest Biotherapeutics is a pre-commercial biotech company developing personalized cancer immunotherapies using its DCVax platform. DCVax works by extracting a patient's own dendritic cells — immune cells that direct the immune system's response — and using them to create a personalized vaccine that trains the patient's immune system to attack their specific cancer. Northwest Bio's lead product, DCVax-L, targets solid tumors that can be surgically removed, and has completed a Phase III trial in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), a highly aggressive brain cancer. Northwest Bio submitted a Marketing Authorization Application in the U.K. in late 2023, making U.K. regulatory approval the company's primary near-term catalyst. A second product, DCVax-Direct, targets inoperable solid tumors and has completed a Phase I trial, with Phase II preparations pending available resources. Northwest Bio has no commercial products and no product revenue, funding operations through capital raises. If DCVax-L is approved, the commercial model would center on selling a patient-specific cell therapy — a complex, labor-intensive manufacturing process. Northwest Bio acquired Flaskworks to develop automated cell culture systems to help scale manufacturing. The company holds Orphan Drug designation for DCVax-L in GBM, providing up to 7 years of U.S. market exclusivity and 10 years in Europe upon first approval. Northwest Bio holds 58 issued patents and 50 pending applications worldwide, with the majority directly related to DCVax products.
