DESCRIPTION

Viracta is a clinical-stage oncology company focused entirely on developing Nana-val, an all-oral two-drug combination targeting cancers caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). EBV is linked to several cancers, including certain lymphomas, nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), and gastric carcinoma, and there are currently no FDA-approved therapies that specifically target EBV-associated cancers. Nana-val pairs nanatinostat, Viracta's proprietary Class I HDAC inhibitor, with valganciclovir, an existing antiviral. Nanatinostat "wakes up" dormant EBV genes in tumor cells, causing them to express viral enzymes; valganciclovir then exploits those enzymes to disrupt DNA replication and kill the tumor cell. Viracta calls this the "Kick and Kill" approach. Nana-val is in a pivotal Phase 2 trial (NAVAL-1) targeting relapsed/refractory EBV+ lymphoma subtypes, and a separate Phase 1b/2 trial in EBV+ solid tumors, primarily NPC. Viracta has no approved products or revenue, and funds operations through equity and debt raises. If approved, Nana-val would be sold to hospitals and oncology centers in a specialty pharma model. Viracta also holds a licensing deal with ImmunityBio, which is developing nanatinostat alongside NK cell immunotherapies; Viracta is eligible for up to $100M in milestones plus royalties. Longer-term, Viracta aims to extend the "Kick and Kill" approach to other herpes family virus-associated cancers, including glioblastoma and Kaposi's sarcoma.
