DESCRIPTION

Republic Services is one of the largest waste management companies in North America, collecting, processing, and disposing of solid waste for residential, commercial, and industrial customers across the U.S. and Canada. Waste collection is the core business, generating roughly 68% of revenue, split across residential curbside pickup under municipal franchise contracts (~18% of revenue), small-container service for businesses and retail (~30%), and large-container service for industrial and construction customers (~19%). Collected waste flows through Republic's 255 transfer stations to one of its 207 active landfills or 79 recycling centers. This vertical integration—owning collection, transfer, and disposal assets—is central to the business model, as Republic captures both collection fees and landfill tipping fees when it disposes of waste in its own facilities. About 67% of collected solid waste is internalized this way. Republic also runs an Environmental Solutions segment (~11% of revenue) handling hazardous and non-hazardous industrial waste, including treatment, disposal, field services, and emergency response for industrial, petrochemical, and oil & gas customers. Pricing is the primary earnings lever, with management targeting price increases above cost inflation. Roughly 63% of restricted pricing contracts use inflation indices that have historically run above headline CPI. Republic also operates polymer centers that convert recycled plastics into food-grade PET, and landfill gas-to-energy projects that produce renewable natural gas. Republic grows through organic price increases, acquisitions (targeting $1B+ annually), and these sustainability initiatives.
