DESCRIPTION

Credit Suisse was a Swiss global bank founded in 1856 that provided wealth management, retail and corporate banking, asset management, and investment banking services. Following a series of major risk management failures — including a CHF 4.8B loss from Archegos Capital in 2021 and significant exposure to the collapsed Greensill Capital — Credit Suisse suffered a severe bank run and was acquired by UBS in March 2023 for CHF 3.7B in an emergency transaction orchestrated by the Swiss government. Credit Suisse now operates as a wholly owned UBS subsidiary and is in the process of being merged into UBS AG. Credit Suisse's core businesses are Wealth Management, which serves UHNW and HNW clients globally through relationship managers and generates revenue from net interest income, management fees, and transaction revenues; Swiss Bank, the domestic franchise serving retail, SME, and corporate clients with mortgages, loans, deposits, and investment services; and Asset Management, which manages CHF 373B in AUM for institutional and wholesale clients. Revenue is driven by net interest income on loans and deposits, recurring asset-based fees, and transaction revenues. Total AUM stood at CHF 1,176B at year-end 2023, down from CHF 1,292B, driven by CHF 107B of net outflows. The former Investment Bank and other non-core assets are being wound down as part of UBS's integration plan, which targets substantial completion by end-2026.
