Fresh Del Monte Produce is one of the world's largest producers, marketers, and distributors of fresh fruit and vegetables, operating primarily under the Del Monte brand across more than 80 countries. Bananas are the company's highest-volume product, accounting for roughly a third of sales, though margins in that segment are thin due to commodity pricing and disease-related crop pressure. The larger Fresh and Value-Added Products segment includes pineapples, fresh-cut fruit and vegetables, avocados, and prepared foods. Fresh Del Monte claims to be the largest U.S. marketer of fresh pineapples, and its proprietary premium varieties — Pinkglow, Honeyglow, and Rubyglow — command meaningful price premiums over commodity pineapples. Fresh-cut fruit and vegetables, sold ready-to-eat through retail, club stores, foodservice, and convenience channels, is the fastest-growing part of the business. Fresh Del Monte is vertically integrated, owning farms, refrigerated container vessels, port facilities, distribution centers, and fresh-cut processing facilities — it sources roughly half the produce it sells from its own farms. The company also operates a third-party ocean freight business using excess vessel capacity. North America represents the majority of sales. Fresh Del Monte's strategy centers on shifting its portfolio toward higher-margin value-added products and away from commodity exposure, including expanding premium pineapple acreage across multiple continents and growing fresh-cut operations globally. In early 2026, Fresh Del Monte won a bankruptcy auction to acquire Del Monte Foods' canned vegetable and tomato businesses for ~$285M, which would also give Fresh Del Monte global ownership of the Del Monte trademark.
