DESCRIPTION

C.H. Robinson is North America's largest freight broker. Robinson does not own trucks, ships, or planes — instead, Robinson acts as the intermediary between shippers (companies that need freight moved) and carriers (the companies that actually move it), arranging transportation across truckload, LTL, ocean, air, and customs brokerage. Robinson serves approximately 75,000 customers globally. Robinson makes money on the spread between what it charges shippers and what it pays carriers; total revenues are largely pass-through carrier costs, making adjusted gross profit (AGP) the key economic measure of the business. Robinson operates two primary segments: North American Surface Transportation (NAST), which handles domestic TL and LTL brokerage across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, and Global Forwarding, which arranges international ocean freight, air freight, and customs brokerage across a global network. Robinson also operates Robinson Fresh, a produce sourcing and marketing business, and Managed Solutions, a 4PL and managed transportation service. Transportation services account for roughly 95% of AGP. Robinson's cost structure is primarily personnel, and the company has been aggressively automating manual tasks across the shipment lifecycle using proprietary AI agents built on its Navisphere platform, achieving over 40% productivity improvement since 2022. Robinson's current strategy focuses on growing market share, expanding gross margins through AI-powered dynamic pricing, and improving operating leverage by decoupling headcount growth from volume growth.
