DESCRIPTION

Village Super Market operates a chain of 37 supermarkets in the northeastern U.S., primarily in New Jersey and New York, under three banners: ShopRite (the core banner), Fairway, and Gourmet Garage. ShopRite stores are full-service supermarkets ranging from roughly 40,000 to over 80,000 sq. ft., offering groceries, fresh departments, prepared foods, and pharmacies. Fairway stores emphasize fresh, natural, and specialty products, while Gourmet Garage operates smaller NYC specialty markets focused on organic and gourmet items. Village sells directly to consumers through physical stores and online pickup and delivery. A defining structural feature of Village's business is its membership in Wakefern Food Corporation, the largest retailer-owned food cooperative in the U.S. Wakefern membership gives Village supply chain scale, brand rights to all three banners, centralized advertising, and e-commerce infrastructure. Members must source at least 85% of their requirements through Wakefern, and Wakefern distributes substantially all of its earnings back to members as patronage dividends, effectively reducing Village's cost of goods. Own-brand products account for about 18% of sales. Village's growth strategy centers on replacing older, smaller stores with larger modern formats — typically 70,000–80,000+ sq. ft. — rather than geographic expansion, with the goal of broadening product assortment and improving store productivity.
