DESCRIPTION

Protalix BioTherapeutics is a small biopharmaceutical company focused on developing and manufacturing enzyme replacement therapies (ERTs) for rare lysosomal storage disorders. Protalix has two commercial products: Elfabrio (pegunigalsidase alfa) for Fabry disease and Elelyso (taliglucerase alfa) for Gaucher disease. Protalix does not sell directly to patients — it manufactures the drug substance and sells it to commercial partners who handle all distribution and patient-facing commercialization. Elfabrio is partnered with Chiesi Farmaceutici globally, while Elelyso is partnered with Pfizer (ex-Brazil) and Fiocruz in Brazil. Revenue is recognized on delivery to each partner's inventory, which creates quarter-to-quarter volatility since partners order on their own schedules. Protalix also earns milestone payments tied to Chiesi's regulatory and commercial achievements. Protalix manufactures its products using ProCellEx, its proprietary plant cell-based protein expression platform, which Protalix argues offers advantages over conventional mammalian systems, including lower capital costs, flexible scale-up, and no risk of mammalian viral contamination. Elfabrio is the primary growth driver, with Chiesi driving commercial penetration in the Fabry disease market. In the pipeline, Protalix's most advanced asset is PRX-115, a PEGylated uricase in Phase 2 for uncontrolled gout, with top-line results expected in 2027. Earlier-stage assets include PRX-119, a long-acting DNase I in preclinical development, and an antisense oligonucleotide research collaboration targeting rare renal diseases.
