DESCRIPTION

Tompkins Financial is a community bank holding company headquartered in Ithaca, New York. Tompkins operates through its single banking subsidiary, Tompkins Community Bank, which runs 54 branches across New York and Pennsylvania, serving Central New York, Western New York, Hudson Valley, and the greater Philadelphia area. The core business is traditional community banking — taking in local deposits and deploying them as loans across commercial, agricultural, consumer, real estate, and lease categories to businesses and households. Tompkins makes money primarily through net interest income, the spread between what it earns on loans and securities and what it pays on deposits and borrowings. Profitability is driven by loan volume and mix, net interest margin, credit quality, and the ability to attract low-cost local deposits. Tompkins also operates a smaller wealth management segment under the Tompkins Financial Advisors brand, offering investment management, trust and estate services, and financial and tax planning, which generates fee-based income. Tompkins sold its insurance subsidiary to Arthur J. Gallagher in October 2025, exiting that business entirely. Tompkins pursues growth organically by expanding its loan book and deepening deposit and wealth management relationships, and through M&A targeting culturally aligned banks and financial services businesses. Tompkins positions itself on local decision-making and personalized service, and is investing in digital capabilities and internal automation to improve efficiency.
