Lifecore Biomedical is a CDMO specializing in sterile injectable pharmaceuticals and medical devices, with a particular focus on aseptic fill-finish manufacturing — filling drug products into syringes, vials, and cartridges under sterile conditions. Lifecore's niche is complex, highly viscous formulations that most CDMOs lack the capability to handle. Lifecore is also a leading U.S. manufacturer of pharmaceutical-grade hyaluronic acid (HA), a biopolymer used in ophthalmic and orthopedic applications, produced via a proprietary fermentation-based process. Revenue comes from two streams: bulk HA raw material sales to customers, and CDMO services — both development work (formulation development, analytical testing, clinical manufacturing) and recurring commercial fill-finish manufacturing under long-term supply agreements. Customers are largely global and emerging biopharma and biotech companies. Lifecore's cost base is largely fixed, so gross margins expand as volumes increase. Ten development programs are in late-stage development, and commercial approval of these programs would convert into recurring manufacturing revenue. Under a new management team, Lifecore is targeting growth by deepening existing customer relationships, advancing its development pipeline, and expanding its customer base — notably toward large multinational pharma companies. The installation of a new high-speed isolator filler in late 2024 has also expanded Lifecore's addressable market to include protein, peptide, and antibody fill-finish beyond its traditional HA-based injectable niche.
