DESCRIPTION

Henry Schein is the largest global distributor of healthcare products and services to office-based dental and medical practitioners, serving over one million customers worldwide. The company's core business is acting as a middleman between manufacturers and dental and medical practices, supplying consumable merchandise, equipment, pharmaceuticals, and specialty products. Henry Schein operates through three segments: Global Distribution and Value-Added Services (~85% of revenue), which covers dental and medical consumables, equipment, and ancillary services; Global Specialty Products (~12% of revenue), which manufactures and sells dental implants, biomaterials, endodontic products, and orthopedic implants across ~90 countries; and Global Technology (~5% of revenue), which develops practice management software including Dentrix and Dentrix Ascend. Henry Schein sells through a direct field sales force, telesales, and an e-commerce platform. Profitability is driven by product mix — corporate brand products carry higher margins since Henry Schein captures both manufacturer and distributor margin — as well as scale across 38 distribution centers shipping ~150,000 cartons daily. Specialty products and technology software carry structurally higher margins than commodity distribution, and management targets these segments to represent over 50% of non-GAAP operating income by end-2027. The technology segment is shifting from legacy on-premise software to cloud-based SaaS subscriptions. Henry Schein's BOLD+1 strategy focuses on growing high-margin businesses, expanding e-commerce, integrating AI tools, and driving cross-selling across its distribution, specialty, and software customer bases.
